PCT Day -2: Birthday Blues & Backpack Blues

Today’s my birthday. It’s a weird feeling being here, thousands of kilometers from home, dealing with jet lag and missing my family and friends. I didn’t expect it to hit me this fast, but I’m already starting to miss them.

Happy Birthday

Morning: Last-Minute Breakfast & Beach Stroll

Yesterday, I tried to adjust my internal clock and went to bed around 10 PM. Even though I woke up before 5 AM, I managed to convince myself to sleep a little longer and didn’t get up until 8:25 AM. That meant a quick shower and a mad dash for breakfast, which ends at nine. I barely made it.

After breakfast, I headed to the beach. I wandered around a bit, not really knowing what to do with myself, so I decided to just chill.

Oh, and during my morning walk, I managed to step on something sharp that lodged itself in my heel. A seashell, maybe? It was tough and pretty unpleasant to pull out. Great way to start the trail, right? 😂 Walking barefoot on the beach was a brilliant idea.

Afternoon: Beach Round Two & The Heavy Pack

In the afternoon, I went back to the beach, this time on the other side. But I wisely kept my shoes on. After the heel incident, I’m being a lot more careful with my feet.

When it comes to food supplies, I’ve got way too much. I don’t even know how I’m going to pack it all. My backpack is ridiculously heavy, and I need to figure something out because this isn’t going to work.

California’s Vibe

I feel like I’m in one of those hippie neighborhoods in San Diego, or maybe all of California is like this? 🙂 I see all sorts of interesting people everywhere, there’s a constant smell of weed, and I even spotted a bong full of ice on the beach. Maybe it’s inspiration, but it’s definitely an unusual sight.

Daily Summary

Walked about 6 km, but 0 km on the PCT so far. This day was more about resting, but I did confirm that the backpack needs better organization, and I’m starting to get used to the California vibe.
