PCT Day 9: Julian Town and a Well-Earned Rest

Sleepless Night, But Rest Nonetheless

I woke up around 11 PM and spent about an hour chatting with folks back home in the Czech Republic. Eventually, I managed to drift back off, and considering we were sleeping in a dry riverbed, it was a pretty decent night’s sleep.

Morning Pancakes and Coffee

The morning started off on a high note – some folks showed up handing out pancakes. What a welcome change from all the oatmeal and instant meals. Paired with coffee, it’s those little luxuries on the trail that can really lift your spirits.

Julian Town and Free Pie

Today marked our first ride in a car on the trail, heading into the town of Julian. It felt a bit strange, after days on foot, to be sitting in a vehicle, watching the world whiz by through a window. But the town visit was absolutely worth it.

PCT hikers are welcomed with open arms here – at Mom’s Pie shop, they get a free slice of pie. Naturally, I wasn’t going to pass that up.

A Tricky Start in Town

Even though I was looking forward to town, I felt a bit out of sorts for a while. I didn’t recognize anyone, didn’t know where to go, and for a moment, a wave of anxiety about what’s next washed over me. Luckily, I eventually found Charlie, which brought a sense of calm. I even saved his phone number so we wouldn’t get so easily separated next time.

Lunch and Planning

For lunch, I went with BBQ pizza – massive, hearty, and exactly what I needed after those tough days on the trail. Now, we’re just chilling and waiting for a Trail Angel, with whom we’re supposed to stay for two nights.

I also ordered a footprint for my new tent, which is supposed to be waiting for me at Paradise Valley Café. Fingers crossed it arrives before I do.
