Trek Bílé Karpaty! The name alone whispers promises of a proper adventure. Tomorrow, Brixie, my trail dog, and I will be at the start line, and I’m genuinely stoked. For both of us, this is our very first dogtrekking event, so the adrenaline is practically buzzing!
This tough undertaking, deep in the heart of the White Carpathians Protected Landscape Area, is notorious for its brutal route. It’s designed to test our mettle and our teamwork. I signed up back in the summer, but the organizers threw us a curveball just before the start. The route got tweaked, making it a bit longer and gnarlier. We’re looking at roughly 56 km with a total elevation gain of 2,316 meters and a maximum time limit of 16 hours in the Dogtrekking Mid category. Talk about a challenge, right?
Road to Nivnice: D1 Highway, a Battle with the Rain
I took today off so Brixie and I could get to Nivnice early and stress-free. That’s where we kick off tomorrow morning. But the drive itself turned into a mini-adventure. We spent nearly six hours on the road – even with a lunch stop and a quick resupply run for grub. The D1 highway threw every kind of rain shower our way, making the journey a bit of a slog, but it sure didn’t dampen our spirits. We rolled in just after 4 PM, finally on location, geared up for the Trek Bílé Karpaty!
We’re checked in now, trying to recharge. Registration kicks off at 6 PM, where we’ll pick up our map, itinerary, and start card. Before hitting the sack, we’ve got a briefing at 9:30 PM to get the final lowdown on the route and mandatory gear. That’s crucial, because the Trek Bílé Karpaty cuts through a Protected Landscape Area and demands maximum respect for nature. You know how vital a solid night’s sleep is before an extreme race like this? I’m hoping we get plenty!
Prepping for Your First Dogtrekking Mid
The Dogtrekking Mid category, which we’re tackling, is designed to boost physical and mental fitness, and most importantly, strengthen the bond between handler and dog. Brixie and I will hit the White Carpathians trail, packed with climbs, stunning vistas, and wild descents that even dip into Slovakia. We’ve got our GPS route files downloaded, so here’s hoping we don’t get lost out there.
Wish us luck! The mass start is Saturday at 7:00 AM, so expect a real mad rush right from the get-go. We’ll check in tomorrow with the first recap of how we fared at the start and through the initial stretch of the route.
