Hiking with my Son: Packed and Ready, But Doubts Emerge Before Departure

So, are we packed? Yes, and I hope we have everything, so we can set off. I was really looking forward to this trip with my son, as I couldn’t wait for some dedicated time just for the two of us. Hiking with my son represents precious moments for me, but suddenly the whole situation is unexpectedly getting complicated.

An Unexpected Complication Before Departure and an Offer from My Daughter

My son came to me saying he doesn’t want to go on the hike. He didn’t say he didn’t want to go with Dad, but that he doesn’t feel like going on the hike itself and wants to stay home with Mom. At that moment, my daughter quickly chimed in: “Dad, I’ll go with you!” But I have to reply: “Sweetheart, that’s not possible, you already have your camp paid for on the same date, and you’re going with your preschool friend.”

I feel so bad and sad about this situation. I prepared everything with great anticipation, and now I’m figuring out how to make the trip a joy and an experience for my son, not a hardship.

Searching for Causes: Developmental Stage or a Demanding Schedule?

I’m trying to console myself and find a reasonable explanation for all of this. It’s quite possible that my son has become more attached to his mother over the last two weeks. I was in Sweden, and of course, I was also at work.

After all, during our trek on the Lužnice River Trail earlier this year, he was tearful for his mom at times. Could this be a natural developmental stage? On the other hand, when I came home from work today, he himself suggested he wanted to go for a bike ride. Even though it was a short five-kilometer loop, we went.

Will We Manage, and Will It Be Good?

I’m trying to believe that things will turn around in the end and we’ll enjoy it together. I really want it to be a great experience full of joy for him, not an inconvenience.

Will it be good? Will we manage it smoothly? And how do you all handle similar moments of rejection or attachment to the other parent?

Preparation Summary

  • Starting Point: Home before departing for the hike
  • Trail Companion: Son
  • Experience of the Day: A shared 5km bike ride after coming home from work
  • State of Mind: A mix of anticipation, sadness, and doubt before departure
