Camino Day 5: New Beginnings and Tasty Lunches

Early Start and Leaving Portugal

I got an early start today. Slept well at the albergue, even though I was up a few times during the night. Woke around six, called home, packed my gear, and was on the road by 7:20.

Today, I also left Portugal.

And crossed into Spain!

Meeting Friends on the Trail

I was happy to reach Tui. As I was leaving the cathedral, I bumped into my German peregrino friend, whose name I still don’t know. A few kilometers past Tui, by the water, I also met Šárka. She mentioned she’d finally lightened her pack – she’d mailed home things she thought she wouldn’t need to Santiago. She gave me a filled pastry, and since she wanted some quiet reflection time, I moved on.

First Spanish Lunch

It’s 2:14 PM, and after nearly 28 km, I’m grabbing my first Spanish lunch at the edge of O Porriño. I have no clue what I ordered, but hopefully, it’s good. Turns out, it was fantastic! Judging by the smell, the food was clearly cooked over a real fire. So, what was on my menu?

  • Lasagna
  • Steak – actually ribs with fries and salsa
  • Coca-Cola
  • Espresso

And all for €10. After a feast like that, I was ready to keep going.

The Walk Through O Porriño

The walk through this town wasn’t pretty – roads, industrial zones, nothing inspiring! I was glad to get out of there. I ran into Šárka again, but she wanted to walk alone. We didn’t see anyone else from previous days today.

Arriving in Redondela

Finally, I made it all the way to the town of Redondela, where I found accommodation. The €13 price is reasonable, and the option to get my clothes washed and dried after five days for €6 was a welcome bonus!
